Missed Connection

My first assignment for this summer's class at SVA was an illustration for a message in the "Missed Connections" section of Craigslist. The cryptic post I picked said simply, "Your contribution to the universe has been acknowledged." It reminded me of all of the amazing subway musicians I've seen surrounded by herds of oblivious commuters, and also those few times I've heard something wonderful drifting mysteriously from a distant part of the station.
I was a little nervous to undertake this when it popped into my head; the colors were so moody, and the composition required to pull off the concept was pretty deadpan. But I wound up being pleasantly surprised—it's probably one of my favorite pieces so far. I am very much in love with all the characters here, especially the cranky New Yorkers in the middle.

Joy, Patience, & Peace
I recently embarked on a new adventure; I'm now merrily popping out bi-weekly illustrations for the online magazine The Wheelhouse. {I am pleased to share "visual Fridays" with art-director-extraordinaire Faith McCormick, who is a very excellent person and who also happens to have a stunning blog.}
The three pieces here are the first in a series called "Fruit Salad," a set of 8 x 10 posters exploring the virtues that are packaged and shipped as "the fruit of the spirit." Love is actually first on the list, but I had the one for joy just sitting in my head begging to be let out onto paper, so I decided to jump into things and swim along from there.
